<b>Foreign Currency and Credit Cards</b><br />
Payment in hotels, travel agencies, and airlines are made in foreign exchange. Credit cards like American Express, Master and Visa are accepted at major hotels, shops, and restaurants. Remember to keep your foreign exchange encashment receipt while making foreign exchange payments or transferring foreign currency into Nepali rupees. The receipts may be needed to change left-over Nepali currency into hard currency before leaving the country. However, only 10 percent of the total amount may be converted by the bank. ATM is widely in use in Kathmandu.<br />
Major banks, hotels and exchange counters at Tribhuvan International Airport provide services for exchanging foreign currency.Exchange rates are published in English dailies such as The Rising Nepal, The Kathmandu Post and The Himalayan Times. Nepali currency notes are found in denominations of Rupees 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are found in denominations of Rupees 5, 2 and 1. One rupee equals 100 paisa.<br />

<b>Business Hours in Nepal</b><br />
Nepal is five hours 45 minutes ahead of GMT.Business hours within the Valley:<br />
Government offices are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday in summer and from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. in winter. On Fridays Government offices open from10 a.m. to 3p.m. Most business offices including travel, trekking and tour agencies are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Embassies and international organizations are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Most shops open after 10 a.m. and close at about 8 p.m. and are usually closed on Saturdays.Business hours outside the Valley:<br />
Government offices are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday in summer and from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. in winter. On Fridays Government offices open from10 a.m. to 3p.m.  Banks are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays, banks remain open until 12 p.m. only. Business offices are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Recently many private banks have re-organized to have different branches open at various different times making banking hours longer. If one branch is closed another will be open.Holidays:<br />
Nepal observes numerous holidays most of which have cultural or religious significance. Visitors wishing to partake in the holidays or observe local festivals, may want check our calendar. The longest holiday in Nepal is during the Dashain festival in late September or October. Government offices and banks observe most of the national holidays. Major towns have electricity and the voltage available is 220-volts and 50 cycles. Load shedding or power cut is scheduled during the dry season and eases off once it begins to rain. However, most major hotels have uninterrupted power supply through their own generators.<br />

Major Nepali daily newspapers are  Gorkhapatra,  Kantipur,  Rajdhani,  Samarcharpatra,  Nagarik  and  Annapurna Post while the English dailies are The Rising Nepal, The Kathmandu Post, Republica and The Himalayan Times. A number of other newspapers and magazines are also available. Government audio and television news networks are Radio Nepal and Nepal Television respectively. Numerous FM radio stations and television stations are run by private organizations.<br />

Landline and mobile phone services are available in Nepal. Network covers Kathmandu, major cities and towns and most of Nepal, except some rural Himalayan places. Nepal Telecommunications Corporation at Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, is the national service provider. There are also private service providers. Hotels and private communication centers also provide long distance telephone and fax facilities.<br />

Mahendra Nagar. The only entry point between Nepal and China is at Kodari.<o:p></o:p></div>

possess an international carnet. Facilities for exchange are
available at the point of entry. There are regular day and night bus services

the north. There are regular bus services to Kathmandu from Kodari.<o:p></o:p></div>

A comprehensive network of road communication is under
construction in the country. Pokhara Valley is linked with Kathmandu by Prithvi
Rajmarga. Pokahra, 200 kilometers west from Kathmandu, is also linked with the
Indian border town of Sunauli by another highway named Siddhartha Rajmarga. One
can drive to Kathmandu right from the far eastern and western borders of Nepal
connecting through East-West highway. The interior parts of the country are
also linked with a number of motorable roads. Buses for the different parts of
the country are available at the Central Bus Park at Gongabu. Cars, Jeeps,
mini- buses and other vehicles are also available on hire.<o:p></o:p></div>

Simara, Bharatpur, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhagadhi and flights are
available from these places to hilly regions of the country.<o:p></o:p></div>

Foreign visitors other than the Indian nationals are
required to pay their hotel bills and air travel tickets in foreign currency.
However the other payments must always be made in Nepalese currency. Exchange
Counter at the airport or at the local banks are available. There are foreign
exchange counters available at different places in the city. Tourists are also
advised to obtain and retain the foreign exchange encashment receipts so as to
reconvert the unused Nepali currency into foreign currency at the time of
departure.<o:p></o:p></div>

Visitors are required to fill in the currency declaration
from at the port of entry. Tourists other than Indians are not allowed to bring
in the Indian currency. Major national dailies publish foreign exchange rates every

Channel for quick clearance without a baggage check. If you
are carrying dutiable articles, you have to pass through the Red Channel for
detailed customs clearance.On arrival at either Tribhuvan International Airport
or any of the land entry posts, baggage is inspected by customs officers. A
tourist may bring dutiable goods such as tobacco and liquors free of duty and

Rains lash Nepal from June to September, washing away roads and obscuring mountain views. The best months for trekking are October and November. Two major festivals, Dasain and Tihaar, also fall during this period. The downside is that because so many people chose to visit Nepal at this time, it can be hard to find a decent room if you don’t book in advance, and prices rise. Temperatures drop dramatically between December and February and many lodges in trekking areas close but this is a good time to visit the low-lying jungle regions on the border with India, including Chitwan National Park. April to early June sees warmer weather and rhododendrons coming into bloom. This is the best time to view wildlife. A haze can obscure views of the mountain areas but you can normally trek above it. This is the second most popular period to visit Nepal.<br />

Flights are reasonably priced. Hour-long ‘Mountain Flights’ – a scenic loop out of Kathmandu, with fantastic views of Everest – are extremely popular and not much more expensive than a normal flight. Nepal has one of the least-developed road networks in the world; each year the monsoon season takes its toll. Public buses serve every paved road; these are cheap but slow and often very uncomfortable. Regularly scheduled, ‘luxury’ tourist buses can be booked through travel agents. Bicycle rental shops can be found in Kathmandu: elsewhere they're rare.<br />

Outside the October to December high season prices can drop by 50%. In Kathmandu and Pokhara accommodation ranges from rock-bottom budget guesthouses to 5* hotels costing £150 per night. In other major tourist destinations you will find a good range of well-run, friendly guesthouses; teahouses and other accommodation options dot most of the major trekking trails. On the quieter trails accommodation can be spartan, but popular regions such as Annapurna and Everest have hotels with hot water, electricity and sometimes Western menus. Village homestays are also becoming increasing popular.<br />

Nepali food is generally less spicy than across the rest of the subcontinent. Nepal’s national dish is daal bhaat – rice, lentils and lightly curried vegetables. Vegetarians are well served here as most Hindu Nepalis don’t eat meat. In contrast, the Newars indigenous to the Kathmandu Valley are big meat- eaters, with water buffalo, goat and wild boar all on the menu. In Kathmandu you’ll also find many restaurants serving Tibetan and Indian cuisine.<br />
<br />
Local liquors include chang (a barley beer), arak (a spirit brewed from potatoes) and, for the brave, rakshi (a knock-out distilled rice wine). If you’re after something non-alcoholic, coconut water and lassi (a sweet yoghurt drink) are great refreshers. Don’t leave Nepal without trying a cup of chiya – sugary, milky, black tea infused with cinnamon, cardamom and cloves.<br />
Health & safety in Nepal<br />

Consult your GP or travel health clinic well before departure to check on recommended vaccinations, which may include typhoid and hepatitis A, plus meningitis if trekking to outlying areas. Malaria is present below 1,200m; consider taking antimalarials. In town, stick to bottled water. Take water-purifying tablets with you if you’re trekking or heading off the beaten track.<br />
<br />
If trekking at high altitude take precautions to avoid AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Make sure you are physically fit, acclimatise to the altitude slowly, eat high-carb meals and drink plenty of water. Wear sunscreen in the mountains, even when it’s cloudy. Robbery can be a problem in some areas; trek in a group to reduce the risk and keep an eye on the local press to find out about disturbances and impending demonstrations.

Nepal’s unreliable electricity supply restricts the ability to refrigerate produce, which, perversely, has a positive effect because it means most food is prepared to order.<br />

Adventurous gastronomes should venture into the markets to sample fresh fruits including umpteen varieties of bananas, which are some of the sweetest you’ll ever taste.<br />

At the higher end of the market, Kathmandu has developed an international culinary scene where diners can find dishes from all over the world. Chefs artistically prepare five-star menus, and food competitions have aimed to encourage budding restauranteurs.<br />

Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled.<br />

Nepal has every category of accommodation facilities that range from international standard star hotels to budget hotels and lodges. To ensure quality service, it is advisable to use the facilities and services of Government registered hotels, lodges and homestays. Most hotels offer a choice: bed and breakfast; bed, breakfast and one other meal; or room and full board. During spring and fall, hotels work at near full capacity and are booked well in advance. Therefore, it would be a good idea to check well in advance and book hotels as per need if traveling to Nepal in the peak season.Moderate accommodation facilities are also available in some parts of Kathmandu like Thamel. In such cases, room rates may not include toilets and showers, unless otherwise indicated. Toilets and showers in such cases are generally communal and heating may require additional charges. Such small hostelries are preferred by budget tourists and FITs. Accommodation facilities are available in the mountain tourist areas. While trekking to some areas tenting may be the only alternative if resident villages are scanty and long way off trekking routes. However, most trekking routes have lodges or tea houses to accommodate tourists. <b>Hotels: </b><br />
Kathmandu has an ever expanding selection of international hotels. During peak trekking season (spring and autumn) these get particularly busy, so it is advisable to book well in advance. Comfortable hotels and inexpensive guest houses can also be found in Pokhara, and around the Royal Chitwan National Park in the Terai.<br />
<br />
<b>Note:</b> A government tax is added to bills, which varies according to the standard of the hotel.<br />

<b>Other accommodation: </b><br />
Besides the officially recognised hotels, there are a number of lodges and hostels. In Kathmandu, these are located in the old part of the town, in the streets around the Durbar Square and in the Thamel district. <b>Travel by rail</b><br />
It is not possible to travel from China or India and into Nepal by train. However, Indian Railways (www.indianrail.gov.in) run passenger trains to Gorakhpur, which is near the Bhairahwa border. Cycle-rickshaws and taxis are available there for onward journeys.<br />

There are plans to construct railway lines between Nepal and India, and Nepal and China.<br />
<br />

<b>Driving to Nepal</b><br />
There are seven designated entry points to Nepal by road; six in India (Kakadvitta, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadi and Mahendranagar) and one on the China/Tibet border (Kodari).<br />
<br />
As a general rule, border towns don’t provide much in the way of sightseeing and accommodation; get in and get moving. You can purchase visas at Kakadvitta, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Gaddachowki, and Kodari providing you have cash and a passport-sized photo.<br />
<br />
<b>By road note:</b><br />
Tourists entering the country in vehicles must have an international carnet and an international driving license. Be advised that strikes – known locally as bandas – frequently bring Nepal to a grinding halt. During these strikes the roads close, so keep an eye on the news before you travel.<br />
<br />
Border offices at the India-Nepal border have fixed hours (0600 to 2200). These hours are not always reliable, and long lines can form. While you may be able to find immigration officers who will let you in, don’t count on it. Many tourist and local buses arrive early to secure their spot in line and move through inspection as quickly as possible.<br />
